As the weather turns bright and the sunshine hangs higher and longer in the sky it is hard not to feel refreshed and rejuvenated.
Quick story for you:
In the ides of March (I know, I know, BEWARE…) I took a late winter/early mud season hike to the top of Mount Chocorua, just outside of North Conway, NH. The feeling of uneven earth under the boots and the singing of the ice chains among the rocks and trees was a celebration. At the peak, the wind roared and roiled like a never ending rogue wave, crashing forever over us as we pressed our bodies into the weathered rock to keep from being blown away.
On the way back, we hit about a half mile of waist deep snow, trail that hadn’t been touched in weeks, maybe all winter. Every step was like climbing out of a snow drift, over and over.. and over… and over again. Snow poured into my boots, helping itself to my warm socks and skin, cold soaking my feet. Alarm bells went off in my head: “THIS is how you lose your feet, THIS is how you get stuck on a mountain..” Every tree looked the same, the trail was barely discernible from the surrounding forest. One step at a time was all we could think about, or the whole thing would be too overwhelming. Just when I thought we had lost the trail and would certainly be freezing to death, I saw, beyond a fallen tree, the AMC trail sign we were looking for. We bounded ahead and made our connection, where the trail was well broken, the snow well packed. We were back at the car well before sundown.
Since we survived, I was able to make it to my gig the following day in Portland, ME @ Three Dollar Dewey’s
