Hey all,
Years back, I had the pleasure of recording a demo of my song “Olivia” at Acadia Recording Company in Portland, ME. At the time, I was in early sobriety, and very scared to get back into music. I wondered if I would remember how to play, how to sing. I didn't want to find out! I avoided my guitar, my favorite music, even the topic of music in conversation.
There were people around me who loved me enough to push me toward the studio. Jason, owner-engineer at Acadia was exactly the masterful, yet easygoing guy I needed. He asked what I wanted to record, if I had anything… Did I?
Among my sparse but cherished collection of finished songs, I had “Olivia," one of my earliest - it was all there, in my head, like I had played it for years. All we had to do was shake off the cobwebs and put it together again.
It has been hard to go up in the attic and unbox my love of writing music. I have had to think about why I put it away in the first place. I reckon with the layered years of dust. I remember the droughts, blights and fires that passed below, as well as the times of joy and plenty. Music doesn't belong up in storage. It belongs down here with me.
What else do we keep in the attic, which really should be beside us, warm, by the hearth?
Enjoy this, my first demo of “Olivia”. It was the beginning of a new chapter.
